ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Winona State University settled for a split on their season opening road trip, dropping Sunday's tilt against Washburn University, 84-75. Corey Jeffs led all players with 22 points and Devin Whitelow netted a career-best 18 points in the loss.
Washburn capitalized on 14 WSU turnovers, turning those miscues into 17 points, including 10 on fast break opportunities. The Warriors won the turnover battle, forcing 16 by the Ichabods, but did not convert on any fast break chances.
Winona took a 36-35 edge into halftime, but Washburn's balanced offensive attack in the second half was too much for the Warriors to overcome. Seven Washburn players scored in double digits, including 27 points off the bench.
The Warriors led by five, 50-45, with five minutes gone off the second half clock. Washburn quickly chipped away at its deficit and took the lead for good at the 13:28 mark.
A pair of free throws by Jeffs kept Winona within striking distance with 6:35 remaiing, but the Ichabods put the game away over the next three minutes with a 12-4 run.
Washburn owned a 41-30 rebounding advantage, including 13 on the offensive glass which led to 16 second-chance points with 12 of those coming in the second half of play.
The Warriors shot 45 percent from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, knocking down just three of 12 three-point attempts.
Connor Flack poured in 13 first-half points and finished the game with 15.
The Warriors (1-1) return to Winona for their home opener on Thursday night against Grand View University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in McCown Gymnasium.
