Women’s Basketball holds off Quincy in the first game of the Subway Classic

QUINCY, Ill. – Winona State women's basketball improved to 2-0 on the year with their first road victory against Quincy University (0-3) in the first game of this weekend's Subway Classic, 69-59.

The Warriors got off to a fast start, outscoring the Hawks in the first quarter, 21-6. Quincy took its first, and only lead of the game, by a score of 4-2, but it was all Winona for the remainder of the first quarter.

A three-pointer by Allie Pickrain at 7:10 in the first sparked an 18-2 Warrior run that lasted the rest of the quarter. Gabbie Doud led the team with seven points and in the first quarter. Hannah McGlone tallied five rebounds in the quarter on her way to 12 on the night

As a team, Winona State shot 53.8% from the floor in the first frame. Coach Ballard deployed a two-three zone on defense in the first quarter and it proved very effective as Quincy went just 3-of-15 from the floor in the first quarter.

As the second quarter commenced, the Hawks started to claw their way back into the game. They were 5-for-11 from the three-point arc and outscored the Warriors 25-22 to cut their halftime deficit to 12 points.

The Warriors concluded the first half shooting 58.6% from the floor and going 6-for-9 from the charity stripe. Pickrain led Winona State with 14 points in the first half, followed by Doud (9), and McGlone (5).

Quincy started off the second half on a 10-0 run to get within one possession of the Warriors, 43-41, but WSU never relinquished its lead. Liz Evenocheck knocked down a jumper with three minutes to go in the third to snap the scoreless run. The Warriors would put up six more in the frame while the Hawks failed to score the remainder of the quarter.

Quincy got to within points of the lead in the final quarter, but Winona State continued to answer with buckets of their own.

Pickrain, a freshman, led the Warriors in scoring for the second straight contest with 18 points to go along with three assists. Doud (13) and Evenocheck (12) also ended the night in double digits. McGlone was one point shy of a double-double as the senior chipped in nine points.

Winona State looks to stay unbeaten in their final game of the Subway Classic as they face off against McKendree University at 1 p.m. from Quincy, Ill.
