CROOKSTON, Minn. – Following its best shooting performance of the year from three-point land a week ago, Winona State University hit the skids from downtown in a 73-56 loss at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday evening.
The Warriors shot just 13 percent from beyond the arc (2-15) and posted its lowest scoring output of the season, snapping a four-game win streak.
Saturday's contest featured two of the best three-point shooting teams in the conference, but it was all Golden Eagles this time out. The home team shot 42 percent (13-31) from downtown in the game, including a blistering 9-for-19 effort in the first half.
Crookston led wire-to-wire and built a 12-2 after the opening tipoff on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles knocked down eight of their first 14 attempts from three-point range and carried a 38-29 lead into halftime.
The Warriors attempted just five three-pointers in the second half, but it didn't improve their shooting woes as they owned just a 38 percent clip from the field over the final 20 minutes of play.
Winona held the advantage on the lane in both scoring and rebounding, but it wasn't enough to halt the hot-shooting of Crookston. The Warriors outscored the Golden Eagles in the paint, 42-18, and won the rebound battle, 36-32.
Saturday marked the first time this season that Winona State didn't have at least two players record double digits in the scoring column. Tommy Gathje led WSU with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Mason Domask, Caleb Wagner and Devin Whitelow chipped in eight points apiece in the loss.
Winona State falls to 8-5 (3-4 NSIC) following the setback while Crookston improves to 7-6 (4-3 NSIC).
The Warriors conclude their road trip on Sunday afternoon at Bemidji State. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
