BEMIDJI, Minn. – Winona State University completed an undefeated weekend road trip against NSIC North opponents on Sunday afternoon with a gritty 47-33 victory at Bemidji State University.
Hannah McGlone and Rachel Novotny each recorded double-doubles as the Warriors (11-1, 7-1 NSIC) turn the calendar to 2018 with their sixth straight win.
McGlone finished the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds for her seventh double-double in the past nine games, while Novotny led all players with 15 points and a career-best 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the year.
McGlone scored the game's first four points in the lane before the Beavers pulled ahead early in the first quarter for their only lead of the day, 5-4. The Warriors then proceeded to close out the opening quarter on a 12-4 run.
After holding Bemidji to just nine points in the first quarter, the Beavers flipped the script on Winona and held the Warriors to single digits on the scoreboard, slashing WSU's lead at halftime to 25-23.
Offense remained at a premium in the second half of play, but the Warrior defense was up to the task, limiting the Beavers to just 10 combined points over the final two quarters. Winona stymied the Beaver offense all day long, restraining the home team to single digits in three of the four quarters.
Emily Kieck scored seven of her 10 points on the day in the second half of action. The freshman went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Liz Evenocheck chipped in seven points and seven rebounds.
Bemidji's 33 points are the fewest Winona has surrendered since allowing 31 points to Beloit College on opening night of the 2017-18 season.
WSU's smothering defensive effort allowed the Beavers to shot just 25 percent from the field and 1-of-23 from three-point range.
The Beavers falls to 4-7 (3-4 NSIC) with the loss.
The Warriors resume play in the new year at home against Southwest Minnesota State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, January 5 in Winona.
