WINONA, MINN – Hannah McGlone and Kayla Schaefer combined for 30 points Saturday evening as the Winona State University women put together another convincing home win in McCown Gymnasium, rolling past Concordia-St. Paul, 62-43.
Winona State (8-1, 4-1 NSIC) owns an average margin of victory at home this season of more than 34 points per game.
The Golden Bears managed to narrowly denied McGlone's effort for a fourth straight double-double, but the senior post still led all players with 17 points while recording eight rebounds.
The opening frame of Saturday's NSIC contest emulated that of a heavyweight fight as the two teams traded the lead six times in the first quarter. A fastbreak bucket at the end of the frame by Emily Kieck put the Warriors up by two.
That basket sparked a 11-to-2 run to open the second quarter as the Warriors started to pull away, and ended the first half only surrendering six points to the Golden Bears. Schaefer's basket to end the first half gave Winona a 28-18 lead and the home team owned a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Schaefer scored a season-high 14 points last night and averaged 13.5 for the weekend.
Kieck and McGlone shared the top point total of the first half with seven each. The Warriors held Concordia-St. Paul to a minuscule 23% from the field and 1-for-6 from beyond the arc.
As has been the blueprint this season, Winona State stepped on the gas pedal in the second half. The Warriors started off on a 10-to-3 run and were able to build off of that to increase their lead to a game-high 22 points on their way to victory.
The Warriors shot 46 percent on the night, but only managed a 3-for-13 clip from downtown. However, the Golden Bears went a frigid 4-for-31 from three-point range thanks Winona's perimeter defense.
Allie Pickrain had her lowest scoring output of the year (6 points), but the freshman facilitated the offense with a game-high five assists while pulling down a personal-best nine rebounds.
Winona State has a week to prepare for its next NSIC game, next Saturday, December 16 against Upper Iowa. Tipoff of the Warriors and Peacocks' second matchup this year is set to tip at 4 p.m.
