WINONA, Minn. – Winona State (25-6, 6-0 NSIC) held Sioux Falls (16-15, 3-3 NSIC) to just four hits in two games on Sunday, winning 6-1 in game won and then exploding for an 8-0 win in game two. The Warriors have now won eight straight games.
GAME ONE
Larsen Gives Up Just Three Hits in Win
Mariah Schultz put the Warriors on the board with a RBI single in the bottom of the second.
Lani Van Zyl started the inning with double before scoring on Schultz single. Schultz would come home on a single by
Paige Keegan, giving WSU a 2-0 lead with one out.
Sioux Falls got on the board with run in the top of the third. Winona State quickly responded scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Schleis and Larsen started the inning with a pair of singles to put runners on first and third. Van Zyl drove in Schleis with a single through the left side, giving the Warriors back their two run lead. Schultz would give the Warriors a 4-1 lead doubling down the left field line, driving in Larsen. Unfortunately, the Warriors would strand runners on second and third in the inning.
McKenna Larsen gave the Warriors a 5-1 lead in the fourth, driving in Sam McLean, who drew a walk to start the inning.
Winona State started the fifth with three straight singles, two via the bunt, to load the bases with nobody out. Kolb would hit a sac fly to center, driving in
Paige Keegan.
Larsen pitched well in the first game victory, allowing just three hits and an unearned run. She struck out six and needed 97 pitches.
GAME TWO
Reynen's Gem, Big First Inning Give Warriors the Win
The Warriors started fast in the second game as well, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. Kolb scored thanks to USF error, getting the Warriors on the board. Van Zyl would drive in Larsen with a double to left center. Ali Nowak had the big hit of the inning driving in three with a double to left center. Nowak scored two batters later, coming home on McLean's single through the left side.
In the third inning Sam McLean singled to left center, driving in
Shaye Witte. Reynen did not allow a hit in the first three and 2/3 innings. Sioux Falls got a pair of runners on in the fourth but both were stranded on base. In the bottom of the inning, Schultz homered to left field, putting the Warriors up 8-0. The Cougars didn't do anything in the top of the fifth and WSU secured the 8-0 win.
Jaida Reynen allowed just that one hit in the fourth, pitching all five innings and striking out two.
The Warriors will now travel to Wayne State on Tuesday afternoon for a NSIC double header starting at 1 p.m.
