Warriors End Home Season With Sweep of CSP

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State (42-9, 23-3 NSIC) finished the home season in style, sweeping Concordia St. Paul (15-32, 7-19 NSIC) on Wednesday afternoon. The Warriors won game one 6-0 behind a six-run, fifth inning. In the second game Winona State picked up a 7-0 win.

GAME ONE
Six Run Inning Give WSU

McKenna Larsen pitched well to start the game, not allowing a hit in the first three innings of work. The Warriors put runners on first and third with one out in attempt to give the Warriors and Larsen a lead to work with. The game would stay scoreless as the Warriors stranded runners on second and third.

The Warriors would strike in the bottom of the fifth when Mariah Schultz connected for her seventh homerun of the year, putting WSU up 1-0. The next three Warriors in the lineup would reach, in part due to a CSP error, loading the bases for Jamee Schleis. A three-run double to right center put the Warriors up four. Katelyn Kolb extended the Warriors lead, driving in Schleis. A wild pitch made it 6-0 as Samantha McLean scored from third.

Concordia loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but Larsen pitched out of the jam to keep the shutout bid alive. In the bottom of the inning Lani Van Zyl and Schultz were hit to start the inning. Shaye Witte loaded the bases with a single to left field. Unfortunately the Warriors could not add to their lead.

Larsen tied a season high in strikeouts with nine and allowed just three hits in seven innings.

GAME TWO
Warriors Rack Up Ten Hits To Complete The Sweep

The Golden Bears got a runner to third in the top of the first but did not get on the scoreboard as Jordyn Kleman pitched around a leadoff hit. Winona State countered by putting runners on second and third with one out. After Shultz was hit for the 24th time this year the bases were loaded for Ali Nowak. A ground out to second drove in Larsen to make it 1-0 WSU. Witte would put WSU up three with a two-run single to center field.

Kolb put the Warriors up 4-0 in the bottom of the second, driving in McLean with a sac fly to left field.

Starter Jordyn Kleman pitched around a pair singles to keep the Warriors up four in the top of the third. Concordia put a pair of runners on to start the top of the fifth but Kleman was able to keep the shutout alive thanks in large part to a pair of strikeouts in the inning. WSU added to their lead when Ali Nowak drove in Schultz with a double to left center. Allyson O'Herron made it 6-0 with an infield single to short, driving in pinch runner McKenna Gutt.

Jamee Schleis picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting WSU up 7-0. Kleman finished off the Golden Bears, striking out seven in the seven inning shutout.

This weekend the Warriors travel to take on Northern State and Minnesota State Moorhead in the final regular season games of the season.
