St. Cloud hands Winona State women second straight loss

WINONA, Minn. - Winona State University suffered a 62-55 loss to St. Cloud State on Saturday evening in McCown Gymnasium, marking the Warriors' first back-to-back home losses since February 2014.

The Warrior offense was held out of rhythm by the Huskies for the second straight night as WSU again shot under 40 percent.

Winona went on a pair of five-point runs in the opening quarter, but both times St. Cloud found an answer. The Huskies managed to take a narrow 15-13 lead into the second quarter as both teams shot just 39 percent to begin the contest.

Turnovers would plague the Warriors throughout the first half though as the home team coughed up the ball 11 times over the first two quarters and ended the night with their second-highest total of the season (19).

Coming out of halftime, down just three points, a Kayla Schaefer jump shot sparked a 7-0 run by Winona to give the Warriors a 33-32 edge, but missed opportunities and defense were the theme of the quarter and again the Huskies lead heading into the fourth, 37-35.

St. Cloud proceeded to lead wire-to-wire in the fourth quarter, and prevent any attempt at a Winona rally. Liz Evenocheck drained two three-pointers near the one-minute mark to cut the St. Cloud lead to two points, but that wasn't enough.

Evenocheck lead the Warriors with 14 points on the night, while Novotny was close behind her with 12.

Where Winona State typically shines, the Huskies outscored the Warriors 20-5 in points off the bench.

Hannah McGlone had her double-double streak of six games snapped with six points and eight rebounds.

Saturday marked the first time the Huskies have beaten the Warriors in Winona since December 5, 2008.

WSU falls to 13-3 (9-3 NSIC) with the loss while St. Cloud improves to 11-4 (8-3 NSIC) with the road win.

The Warriors look to put this tough weekend behind them as they travel to Wayne State next Friday to face off against the Wildcats at 6 p.m.
