MINOT, N.D. – Caleb Wagner notched his fourth 20-point effort of the season Friday night as Winona State University continued its momentous stretch with a 70-65 road win at Minot State University.
The Warriors handed the Beavers just their second home loss of the season as WSU (14-7, 9-6 NSIC) has now won 10 of its last 13 games.
Minot falls to 17-4 (11-4 NSIC) with the loss.
Wagner scored nearly half of the Warriors' 32 second-half points, netting 13 of his 23 points over the final 20 minutes. It was Winona's collective effort though in the first half that made the road win even more impressive as the Warriors battled back from a 25-11 deficit midway through the opening half.
Trailing by 14 at the 10:43 mark, Mason Domask's three-pointer ended a three-minute scoreless drought for Winona as the Warriors began to battle back. The junior's bucket from beyond the arc sparked a stretch over the final nine minutes of the first half that saw the Warriors go 6-for-9 from downtown.
Charlie Koontz connected from long range with 4:05 left in the half and Kevion Taylor's three-pointer on the next Winona possession knotted the score at 30-30. Connor Flack and Wagner each knocked down shots from beyond the arc before the break, and a layup by Taylor gave the Warriors a 38-32 advantage at halftime.
Winona never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 12 points as Wagner found the bottom of the net on back-to-back possessions en route to the victory.
The Warriors hoisted at least 30 three-pointers for the second straight contest, and fourth time this season, and are now 4-0 in those games. WSU improved to 8-3 on the year when shooting at least 25 times from downtown.
The Beaver offense, which entered the game ranked second in the NSIC in shooting (49.6%) and was averaging nearly 80 points per game, was held in check by the Warrior defense all night long. Minot shot 47 percent in the setback and just 33 percent from downtown.
The triumph is another big win for Winona in a recent string of notable victories as Minot State had been receiving votes in the NCAA Division II poll for the past several weeks before dropping out prior to Friday's tilt.
Taylor finished the game with 13 points and six rebounds for Winona.
The Warriors conclude their road trip on Saturday evening at U-Mary with a 6 p.m. tipoff.
