LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Emily Kieck and Kayla Schaefer each netted a career-high 21 points on Friday night as Winona State University dominated the fourth quarter in a 66-58 victory at Colorado Christian University.
A three-pointer by Kieck with 5:47 remaining in the fourth quarter sparked a 17-4 run to the finish line in WSU's comeback win. Kieck and Schaefer combined for 14 of the Warriors' final 17 points.
Winona State jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after the opening tipoff, but the Cougars bounced back to take a 10-9 lead after one quarter. The home team ramped up its offensive output in the second frame, leading by as many as 11 points midway through the period. A three-pointer by Schaefer closed the first half as the Warriors went into the locker room trailing, 26-23.
Kieck led the second half comeback, netting 16 of her 21 points on 3-3 shooting from beyond the arc. Schaefer chipped in 12 points in the final two quarters. Winona State outscored Colorado Christian in the second half, 43-32.
Both teams struggled from three-point range on the night, but the Warriors came up when clutch shots when it mattered most. Winona State owned a dominant 54-36 edge in rebounding, and the Warriors made the most of 24 offensive boards with 20 second-chance points.
Senior Rachel Novotny tallied 13 points in the win for WSU while sophomore Taylor Hustad pulled down a season-best 10 rebounds Schaefer added six rebounds and a team-best four assists to her impressive stat line.
Winona State improves to 2-1 on the young season and Colorado Christian falls to 2-3.
The Warriors return to the hardwood tomorrow afternoon as they take on Metro State-Denver at 4 p.m.
