Balanced Warrior attack yields 83-66 win over Viterbo

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University took the court Tuesday night for one final tune up ahead of its conference slate and took care of business with an 83-66 triumph over Viterbo University. All 11 Warriors that saw action scored with Devin Whitelow leading the way with a season-best 17 points.

WSU made the extra pass all night, dishing out 16 assists, but didn't have its sharpest shooting effort from the field. Despite shooting just 37 percent overall and 27 percent from downtown, the Warriors turned in a workman-like effort and came away with a season-high 19 turnovers from the V-Hawks.

Winona State led wire-to-wire in the contest, taking a 38-31 lead into the break. The Warriors stormed out of halftime on an 11-2 run capped on a three-pointer by Caleb Wagner. Winona State's defense denied Viterbo its second field goal of the half until the 14:15 mark.

Following that V-Hawks' bucket, the Warriors put together another offensive spurt – outscoring Viterbo, 12-2, to take a commanding 61-40 advantage midway through the second half. Whitelow dropped 11 points in the second half and freshman Alec Rosner chipped in nine of his career-high 10 points in the final 20 minutes of play. The rookie matched Wagner for the team lead with six rebounds on the night.

Sophomore Dalante Peyton continued his impressive start to the new year with six points, five rebounds, a pair of blocks, one steal and an assist. Senior Mason Domask recorded 12 points and a pair of steals. Tommy Gathje went 3-6 from beyond the arc for all nine of his points.

The Warriors (3-2) open NSIC play on Saturday against Upper Iowa University. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. in McCown Gymnasium.
