HOUGHTON, Mich. – Winona State University shot a season-low 30 percent from the field Wednesday night as the Warriors dropped their final non-conference game of the season to Michigan Tech University, 69-50. The 50-point scoring output marked WSU's lowest since the 2015-16 campaign.
The Warriors saw a significant dip in their offensive output without the services of seniors Charlie Koontz and Tommy Gathje on Wednesday. Winona State (5-6) has now dropped four of its last five ballgames.
Devin Whitelow paced WSU with 13 points against the Huskies.
Whitelow, Caleb Wagner and Kevion Taylor each scored on their first attempts of the evening to stake WSU to a 6-2 advantage early in the contest before a 9-2 Michigan Tech run followed to give the home team the lead for good.
Winona State trailed 34-21 at the break after shooting just 26.7 percent in the first half of action. And, despite a slight uptick in shooting percentage, the Warriors were limited to just four field goals in the final 10 minutes of the second half.
Facing their biggest deficit of the night at 24 points, Dalante Peyton knocked down a three-pointer at the 9:35 mark of the second fame and Nick Klug followed suit from downtown on the following possessions. Mason Domask added a three-pointer of his own at the 5:30 mark and Klug connected again with 4:54 left on the clock from beyond the arc. A layup by Luke Martens at the 3:37 mark stood as WSU's final field goal of the contest.
Freshman Alec Rosner had a team-high five rebounds as the Warriors were out-rebounded by Michigan Tech, 49-30.
Winona State has more than a week to get healthy and back on track before it returns to the court on Sunday, December 30 at Upper Iowa University. The NSIC tilt is slated for 4 p.m. in Fayette, Iowa.
