WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University let a 10-point lead slip away on Friday night in McCown Gymnasium as Augustana University put together a furious second half rally to snap the Warriors' four-game winning streak by a final score of 88-80.
All five starters for WSU posted double digits in the scoresheet with Devin Whitelow dishing out a career-best 12 assists, but those efforts fell by the wayside as the Vikings outscored the Warriors 22-7 over the final five minutes of play. Whitelow's 12 assists were the most since Ben Fischer's 12 on November 22, 2008.
Augustana shot 50 percent from downtown in its comeback victory, saving its biggest shots from beyond the arc for when they mattered most. A three-pointer by Matt Cartwright cut the Warrior lead to 38-32 before the halftime buzzer, but ultimately stood as the precursor for what was to come late in the second half.
Midway through the second frame, Winona State padded its lead to 64-54 on a fastbreak layup by Caleb Wagner off a steal by Mason Domask as the Warriors appeared poised to put their foot on the gas and pull away from the Vikings with ease. A three-pointer by Domask at the 6:43 mark pushed the WSU lead to 70-61, but Augustana couldn't to chip away. The teams traded baskets from three-point range before Tyler Riemersma bodied his way into the lane for back-to-back layups to slash the Vikings deficit to 73-70 with 4:20 remaining.
On the following Augustana possession, Trevor Hanson drilled a deep three-pointer as the shot clock expired to knot the score at 73-apiece. A Warrior turnover followed, and Hanson answered with a dagger from downtown to give the Vikings their first lead of the second half which they did not relinquish.
Augustana only led on two possessions of the first half, with its largest margin coming by two points. The Warriors forced the Vikings into 11 turnovers in the opening frame, but the home team was also uncharacteristically sloppy with the ball early to the tune of seven turnovers. Both teams were limited to just three miscues in the second half.
Wagner and Kevion Taylor scored 15 points apiece in the Warriors' losing effort. Whitelow added 13 points to record his first double-double of the year.
Winona State falls to 4-3 (1-1 NSIC) with the loss while Augustana (4-3, 1-1 NSIC) tallies its first conference win.
The Warriors conclude their current four-game homestand on Saturday night against Wayne State. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
