McGlone reaches milestone in Warriors’ loss at Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. – The Winona State University women aimed for a pair of season sweeps this weekend, but were instead dealt a pair of losses on the road by Concordia and Minnesota State Mankato, the latter coming in a 90-67 setback Saturday evening.

Winona State senior Hannah McGlone joined the 1,000-point club in the Warrior loss.

The Mavericks scored a season-high 90 points against the Warriors as WSU dropped its 10th straight contest.

Mankato entered the contest averaging 66 points per game with the Winona defense allowing just 62 points per contest, but those numbers wouldn't hold true in Saturday's conference tilt.

The Mavericks jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead in the opening quarter, converting on four of their first five shots form beyond the arc. With a minute and a half to go in the first, Emily Kieck knocked down a jumper that sparked an 8-0 run for the Warriors which cut a 14-point Maverick lead down to just to six.

However, that was as close as Winona State would come to the lead for the remainder of the first half as the Warriors went into the locker room facing a 42-30 deficit.

Winona State would hang tough in the third quarter, cutting the Mankato lead to single digits three separate times, but each time the Mavericks would answer back with baskets of their own.

Mankato would then go on an 18-6 run to start the final frame and close out the victory.

The Warriors shot 44 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc tonight, but it was no match for the Mavericks shooting 53 and 48 percent, respectively.

McGlone led the Warriors with 19 points and nine rebounds on the night. She currently sits 17th on the all-time scoring list with 1,012 points.

Allie Pickrain, Kayla Schaefer, and Gabie Doud each chipped in eight points for Winona State as the Warriors fall to 13-11 (9-11 NSIC).

Winona still has a shot at securing a first-round playoff game at home as they close the regular season next weekend with a weekend homestand in McCown Gymnasium.
