WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University's lone senior, Corey Jeffs, led a host of five players who scored in double digits with 17 as the Warriors breezed past Wayne State College on Saturday night in their regular season finale, 89-71.
Jeffs moved into a tie for 25th all-time in program history by playing in his 111th game, but it won't be his last home game as the Warriors have clinched a first round NSIC Tournament game in McCown Gymnasium set for Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Winona State's 18-point victory over the Wildcats avenged a tough two-point loss suffered at Wayne State last month.
Saturday's contest was never in doubt from the midway point of the opening half when the Warriors exploded on a 16-2 run. Charlie Koontz's layup at the 11:33 mark open the run, giving Winona the lead for good, as he scored the first five points of the spurt. Caleb Wagner's three-pointer at the 7:10 mark stretched the WSU lead to 32-17.
The Warriors' first half lead swelled to as many as 22 points on a layup by Jeffs, and the home team proceeded to take a 48-28 advantage into the locker room. Winona went 7-for-12 from beyond the arc in the first half.
It was all Winona State in the final 20 minutes as the Warrior lead hovered around 20 points for a majority of the half.
The Warriors shot 57 percent from the field, their third-highest total of the season, and went 10-for-19 from three-point range in the decisive victory.
Devin Whitelow scored 15 points, Caleb Wagner recorded 14 points and had five assists, and Tommy Gathje chipped in 13 points. Koontz and Kevion Taylor each scored 11 while pulling down six rebounds apiece.
Winona State concludes the regular season with a record of 19-9 (14-8 NSIC), and Wayne State falls to 14-16 (9-13 NSIC).
The Warriors will find out their first round conference tournament opponent before the end of the night on Saturday. Stay tuned to WinonaStateWarriors.com and the Warriors' social media outlets for opponent and ticket information.
