WINONA, Minn. – Wayne State College connected on a buzzer-beater Saturday evening to spoil Winona State's senior night and escape McCown Gymnasium with a 60-59 victory.
For the second straight night, the Warriors went toe-to-toe with a top-10 team from the central region rankings, but Winona was unable to pull of its second straight win as the Wildcats' Erin Norling drained the game-winning shot as time expired.
The teams entered halftime in a 28-28 deadlock and the Warriors owned a 49-44 lead after the third quarter heading into the final 10 minutes of play. A three-pointer by Wayne State earlier in the final period cut the score to 49-47, setting up the game's photo finish.
Neither the Warriors or Wildcats led by more than two points after the made three-pointer. Wayne and Winona traded the lead seven times over the final period until Norling's buzzer-beater allowed the Wildcats to escape with the victory.
The Wildcats shot 63 percent in the second half en route to the win.
Winona owned a 29-22 rebounding advantage, including nine offensive boards which were converted into 16 second-chance points.
Hannah McGlone led the way on senior night, scoring 16 points and collecting nine rebounds in her final home game as a Warrior. Gabie Doud (14) and Allie Pickrain (11) also reached double digits in the scoring column.
Winona State concludes the regular season with a record of 14-12 (10-12 NSIC) and Wayne State finishes the year 24-6 (18-4 NSIC).
The Warriors will travel to Minot State next Wednesday to take on the Beavers in the first round of the NSIC Tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
