Warriors sweep seasons series with CSP

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Winona State University notched its fourth straight road victory with a 90-56 triumph at Concordia-St. Paul on Friday night. Tommy Gathje led the Warriors with 21 points in the season sweep of CSP.

Winona State is playing its best basketball as the postseason approaches, and has won nine of its last 11 overall. Since beating the Golden Bears on December 9th, the Warriors have won 13 of their last 17 and are 9-2 since the calendar flipped to 2018.

WSU never trailed Friday night and led by as many as 28 in the first half. A three-pointer by Connor Flack with 12:10 on the first half clock ignited a 23-7 run by the Warriors which lasted until the 4:26 mark of the period. The stout Winona defense had two stretches during that span which held Concordia off the scoreboard for more than three minutes each.

The Warriors led by at least 20 points for the final 20 minutes in a complete top-down effort from the roster.

Winona's bench scored 43 points, led by Charlie Koontz who matched his season high with 17 points. The junior went 6-for-8 from the field, including two buckets from beyond the arc.

Freshman Devin Whitelow also came off the bench to score 16 points, including 11 in the second half, and led all players with five assists.

In total, Winona State dished out 18 assists while committing just two turnovers.

Defensively, the Warriors forced the Golden Bears into 26 turnovers which WSU converted into 24 points. The Warriors' 15 steals are a new high-water mark for the season.

Winona knocked down 49 percent of its shots in the win, including a 12-for-27 effort from downtown. Friday marked the seventh time in the last eight games the Warriors' have converted on double digits from three-point land.

Gathje is averaging 16 points per game over his last six contests and is shooting 66 percent from the field.

The Warriors will look to avenge one of their two home losses from earlier this season on Saturday evening when they travel to (RV) Minnesota State Mankato for a 6 p.m. tilt.
