ROCHESTER, Minn. – McKenna Larsen and Jordyn Kleman each fired shutouts Friday afternoon as No. 24 Winona State University opened the 2018 campaign with a doubleheader sweep of Lewis University.
Larsen, who ranked ninth in Division II with 12 shutouts a year ago, limited the Flyers to just three hits over 7.0 IP in the opener. The senior southpaw walked one batter and struck out two.
Larsen did a little bit of everything in the win, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. With two outs in the bottom of the first, her RBI-single scored Katelyn Kolb for the first run of the ballgame.
The Flyers broke up Larsen's no-hit bid with a two-out knock in the top of the fourth, and in the bottom of the frame Ann Smolenski's single gave the Warriors an insurance run. Smolenski finished her first collegiate game with two hits and a pair of RBI.
Jamee Schleis doubled to left center in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, and Smolenski followed with a RBI-double down the left field line to make it a 3-0 game. Larsen capped her complete game effort in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.
Kleman also went the distance in the circle in the finale. The sophomore allowed four hits while walking one batter and striking out five.
Lani Van Zyl's two-run homer in the bottom of the third frame was the difference on the scoreboard in the Warriors' 2-0 win.
Kolb went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the second game.
Winona State will return to the RCTC Dome on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Grand View University beginning at 3 p.m.
