No. 8 Winona State opens NSIC slate with sweep

WINONA, Minn. – McKenna Larsen and Jordyn Kleman each recorded complete games on Tuesday evening at Maynard R. Johnson Field as No. 8 Winona State University began conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Upper Iowa University.

Originally scheduled to be played at Upper Iowa, Tuesday's twinbill was moved to Winona due to weather where the Warriors played on their own field for the first time this season while serving as the visiting team.

Winona State (23-3, 2-0 NSIC) won the opener, 9-3, and completed the sweep with a 7-0 shutout of Upper Iowa.

The Warriors plated at least one run in each of the first three innings of the opening ballgame to stake Larsen to an early 5-1 lead. Lani Van Zyl broke the scoring seal with an RBI-double in the top of the first frame and Mariah Schultz added an RBI-single in the second inning to put WSU back on top following a Peacock run in the bottom of the first.

Winona State hung three runs on the scoreboard in the third inning and broke the game open with four more in the sixth. Larsen, Alison Nowak and Ann Smolenski each recorded run-scoring doubles during the rally while Paige Keegan's RBI-single capped the frame.

The Peacocks tagged Larsen for a pair of solo home runs late in the game, but the senior southpaw went on to complete her seventh game of the season. Larsen (8-2) allowed three runs (two earned) over 7.0 IP while striking out three batters in the win.

Kleman (8-1) followed suit in the nightcap by tallying her third complete game shutout of the year. The sophomore scatter six hits over 7.0 IP while striking out a season-high nine batters.

Katelyn Kolb reached base safely in all five plate appearances in the second game. She singled three times, scored a trio of runs and walked twice to cap a 5-for-8 combined day.

Van Zyl went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI in the finale. Larsen went 2-for-4 and led all players with three RBI.

The Warriors upcoming weekend schedule has also been altered due to inclement weather. Winona State's doubleheader against Sioux Falls has been moved up one day to Thursday, and the Warriors will then play Southwest Minnesota State University in Sioux Falls on Friday.
