Warriors complete undefeated Florida trip, extend streak to 14 straight

CLERMONT, Fla. – No. 8 Winona State concluded its stint at The Spring Games Tournament on Thursday afternoon with two more wins to complete the 10-game trip. The Warriors avenged a loss earlier this season to Grand Valley State with a 3-1 victory to begin the day, and capped the sweep with a 6-2 win over Mercyhurst University.

Winona State improves to 17-2 on the year and is currently riding a 14-game winning streak.

A pair of late runs against Grand Valley allowed the Warriors to prevail with a win in Thursday morning's opener. With the game tied 1-1, Rylee Stout drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a two-out RBI-single.

Carly Kordich added an insurance run for the Warriors in the bottom of the sixth frame.

Winona State scratched the plate first with an unearned run in the second inning before the Lakers knotted the score off starter Jordyn Kleman in the top of the fourth.

That run stood as the only blemish of the day for Kleman (5-0) who tossed her third straight complete game. The sophomore scattered three hits and struck out six batters in the win.

Jamee Schleis went 3-for-3 at the plate in game one.

The Warriors found themselves trailing, 2-0, after one inning in the finale against Mercyhurst. The Laker lead was short-lived however, as Winona State plated a pair of runs in the top of the second to tie the ballgame.

Samantha McLean's RBI-single put the Warriors on the board and she later scored the tying run on a wild pitch. McLean went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored for WSU.

Lani Van Zyl broke the game open in the fifth frame with her team-leading sixth home run of the season. Her three-run blast gave the Warriors a 5-2 lead. Van Zyl homered five times and drove in 17 runs over the 10-game tournament.

Mariah Schultz accounted for the final Winona tally with an RBI-single in the sixth.

Starting pitcher Katie Schlegel received a no decision after allowing a pair of runs on five hits over 3.0 IP. Jaida Reynen (4-0) was the winning pitcher for Winona, allowing just one hit over 4.0 IP for her fourth straight victory in the circle.

The Warriors will take next week off before returning to the diamond for six games at the Missouri Western Hy-Vee Classic on March 16-18.
