BISMARK, N.D. – Jordyn Kleman and McKenna Larsen each tossed shutouts Sunday afternoon as No. 8 Winona State University earned a doubleheader sweep at the University of Mary. After sweeping all four games of their weekend road trip, the Warriors (35-5, 14-2 NSIC) enter the final week of the regular season atop the conference standings.
Kleman (15-1) fired a two-hit shutout at Minot on Saturday and blanked U-Mary Sunday with her team-leading seventh shutout this season while lowering her ERA to 1.65. The sophomore struck out six batters and allowed just four hits and one walk over 7.0 IP.
In the finale, Larsen (12-4) allowed just three Marauder hits and matched her season high with six strikeouts. With her third shutout of the season, the senior is now tied for fifth all-time with 17 in her illustrious Warrior career. Larsen's 50 career wins are tied for sixth in program history.
Larsen broke the scoring seal offensively in game one with a two-out RBI single to give WSU an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With a combined 3-for-7 effort at the plate Sunday, Larsen moved into 14th place in Winona State history with 207 career hits. She also drove in three runs to lift her career RBI total to 129 which is 12th all-time in school history.
Rylee Stout went 3-for-4 with two RBI, capping the scoring in the opener with a two-run single in the sixth inning.
Katelyn Kolb, Jen Giesey and Samantha McLean each had two-hit efforts in the finale while Giesey drove in a pair of runs. Lani Van Zyl saw her 20-game hitting streak come to an end in game one but recorded her team-best 23rd extra-base hit with an RBI double in game two.
A two-run single by Ann Smolenski in the seventh inning account for the final Winona State runs of the day.
The Warriors travel to Concordia-St. Paul on Wednesday night for their final regular season road trip of the year. Following that doubleheader, Winona State concludes the regular season with four home games on Saturday and Sunday with a chance to clinch the NSIC Championship on their home field.
