Kleman fans 15, no-hits Wayne State in finale of sweep

WAYNE, Neb. – Jordyn Kleman tossed her first no-hitter of the season on Thursday afternoon in the finale of a conference doubleheader as No. 9 Winona State University swept Wayne State College. The sophomore struck out a career-best 15 batters in the dominant outing.

Winona State (28-4, 7-1 NSIC) didn't allow a single Wildcat run all afternoon, winning the opener in five innings, 8-0, and backing Kleman with a 4-0 victory in game two.

Thursday marked the fourth no-hitter in Kleman's collegiate career. The right-hander improved to 11-1 on the year and owns a 1.02 ERA (5 ER/34.0 IP) over her last five starts.

Playing as the home team in Wayne, Kleman struck out the side in the top of the first inning and the Warrior offense got her all the run support she would need in the bottom of the frame. Alison Nowak's RBI-single plated Mariah Schultz for an early 1-0 Winona State lead. Nowak went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI at the plate in the finale.

Ann Smolenski and Lani Van Zyl each drove in runs over the final two innings and Kleman did the rest by breezing through the Wildcat offense in the 4-0 win.

In game one, McKenna Larsen (9-3) tossed a four-hit shutout and was the benefactor of the Warriors' hot bats offensively. Winona State scored five runs in the third inning and plated four more in the fourth to run-rule the Wildcats in Larsen's start.

Schultz connected on her first home run of the season to spark the third inning rally, a two-run blast that also plated Katelyn Kolb. Schultz was one of four Warriors to record a two-hit game. Jamee Schleis went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBI.

Nowak doubled twice and drove in two runs in the opener as the sophomore finished the day 6-for-7 with four RBI.

Winona State sends Wayne State to a record of 7-20 (1-7 NSIC) with the sweep.

The Warriors were scheduled to play a pair of NSIC doubleheaders at home this weekend, but those games have been cancelled due to snow accumulation in Winona. Stay tuned to WinonaStateWarriors.com for any potential games added to the schedule and updates on next week's home games.
