Larsen, Warriors advance to semifinals with walk off over Northern State

SIOUX FALL, S.D. – Senior McKenna Larsen continues to step up in a big way for Winona State University in the 2018 NSIC Softball Tournament. After pitching the Warriors to an opening round win in relief on Thursday, Larsen's run-scoring walk off single in the bottom of the seventh against Northern State on Friday afternoon secured the Warriors' third straight win over the Wolves this season.

The Warriors' 12th straight victory was of the come-from-behind variety in the 2-1 triumph and sends WSU into the conference semifinals.

Larsen went 2-for-4 at the plate while raising her career-best batting average to .419. The senior also has a career-high 39 RBI on the year with her game-winner accounting for her 144th career RBI – seventh-most in program history.

Northern State broke the scoreless ballgame with a run in the top of the fourth off Jordyn Kleman. The sophomore right-hander allowed just a pair of hits over the final three innings as the Warrior offense got to work.

Mariah Schultz led off the bottom of the fifth for Winona State with a double to deep center and moved to third on a single by Lani Van Zyl. Schultz scored the game-tying run on a double play ball off the bat of Alison Nowak, and the Warriors and Wolves remained in a 1-1 deadlock until Larsen's heroics in the seventh frame.

Kleman (19-1) allowed just one run on five hits over 7.0 IP for her 17th complete game of the season. The sophomore fanned 11 batters, bolstering her NSIC-leading strikeout total to 157 on the year.

Winona State (43-5) advances to play Minnesota Duluth (40-11) in the tournament semifinals later this afternoon. First pitch between the two regionally-ranked teams is set for 4 p.m. at Bowden Park.
