Warriors outlast Michigan Tech for first victory

WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University snapped its three-game skid to begin the season on Sunday afternoon with a hard-fought, 62-59, win over Michigan Tech University inside McCown Gymnasium. Kevion Taylor scored nine of his team-leading 15 points over the final four minutes of action to spark the Warriors' victorious finish.

Taylor's first of three triples in that span came with 4:01 left on the clock to give WSU a 52-51 edge. The teams traded the lead two more times heading to the final whistle with Taylor striking again with 37 seconds remaining to put the Warriors in front for good, 60-59. Devin Whitelow padded the lead on a crafty in-bounds play in the final seconds as Winona State held on for its first win of the 2019-20 campaign.

Taylor had struggled from the field final to his late surge, shooting just 2-11 (2-7 from three) until he found his stride in the waning minutes of the contest. Collectively, Winona State shot 40 percent from the field and 43 percent from downtown – both season highs.

Sophomore Luke Martens poured in a career-best 14 points while matching Andrea Lo Biondo for the team lead with eight rebounds. Whitelow chipped in a season-high 11 points on 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc. Caleb Wagner dished out a team-leading six assists.

Playing with a short bench, the Winona State reserves stepped up in a big way and combined for 23 points.

The Warriors won the battle on the glass, 39-31, which was a first this year and certainly helped translate to the win. Winona State will look to clean up an uncharacteristically sloppy day which saw the Warriors commit 15 turnovers and led to 17 points for the Huskies.

Winona State continues its four-game homestand next Saturday against Bethany Lutheran College at 3 p.m.
