Taylor joins 1,000-point club as WSU outlasts UIU in overtime

WINONA, Minn. – Saturday night's tilt inside McCown Gymnasium began with Winona State University honoring senior guard Caleb Wagner for eclipsing the 1,000-point milestone last weekend. The evening ended with junior Kevion Taylor scoring a game-high 25 points in an 85-80 overtime triumph over Upper Iowa and joining his teammate in the exclusive club.

Taylor becomes just the 39th player in the Warriors' storied 105-year history to reach the century mark.

Winona State (6-6, 3-3 NSIC) extends its winning streak to three straight entering the holiday break and returns to the .500 mark for the first time since late November. The victory also avenges an 84-79 setback at Upper Iowa (6-6, 3-3 NSIC) to open conference play last month.

Taylor took over in the extra frame, scoring nine of his 25 points, including a deep three-pointer to start the overtime period. The Peacocks answered on the other end with a triple of their own before Taylor found an open Alec Rosner for the go-ahead bucket from beyond the arc. Rosner scored five of his 17 points in overtime.

Taylor padded the lead to 78-73 with a pull-up jumper in the lane as the clock ticked under one minute to play and Winona State sealed the win at the free throw line.

Upper Iowa led by 10 points at the 10-minute mark of the first half and owned a nine-point advantage with 3:19 left in the frame. However, the home team rallied to erase its deficit and take a 28-27 lead into the break.

Wagner hit a big three with 2:58 left on the first half clock to spark a 10-point run into the locker room which Rosner capped from downtown.

The Warriors carried that momentum into the second half to build a 43-33 lead over the first five minutes of action on some red-hot shooting. WSU went 6-6 from the field to open the second period which saw Wagner bury a pair of triples and Taylor add one of his own.

Wagner concluded the game with 23 points on 4-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Winona State collectively shot 48 percent from the field in the game and 52 percent (14-27) from three-point land.

Winona State forced 21 Upper Iowa turnovers on the night which translated into 25 points.

The Warriors return to action in the New Year, traveling to MSU Moorhead and Northern State on January 4-5.
