SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Winona State University continued the red-hot start to its season on Friday night at the Sanford Pentagon, outlasting Augustana University in overtime, 72-64. The Warriors once again showed a balance scoring attack, with four registering double digits, and some fierce defense when they needed it most.
Winona State erased a 15-12 first quarter deficit by holding the Vikings to eight points in the second frame, and after allowing the home team to explode for 26 fourth-quarter points, the Warriors put the clamps on in overtime, allowing just three Viking points for the win.
Augustana scored the first points of overtime, breaking a 61-61 tie with a layup in the lane. From there, WSU held the Vikings to an 0-8 effort from the floor over the final 4:18 of the frame. Taylor Hustad put the Warriors in front for good with a layup at the 2:02 mark amid six consecutive points she scored herself for Winona State.
Hustad scored 10 points in the game and pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Allie Pickrain led the Warrior offense with a season-high 18 points. Taylor Klug and freshman Caitlin Riley scored 11 apiece. Fellow rookie Alex Dornfeld matched her season-best with seven rebounds off the bench.
The Winona State reserves outscored the Vikings' bench, 27-21, and the Warriors forced 23 Augustana turnovers which translated into 16 points.
The Warriors shot 40 percent in the victory while holding Augustana to a 31.4% clip. Neither team shot the ball particularly well from downtown, but Riley did knock down two of four chances. Pickrain went 7-16 from the field while Klug was efficient off the bench once again with a 5-9 effort.
Winona State improves to 6-0 (2-0 NSIC) with the triumph while Augie falls to 4-2 (0-2 NSIC).
The Warriors conclude the weekend and their current stretch of five straight away from home on Saturday afternoon at Wayne State. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
