Wayne State tops Winona State, 70-63

WAYNE, Neb. – Winona State University dropped its third straight contest on Saturday night at Wayne State College, 70-63. Alec Rosner, Kevion Taylor and Caleb Wagner combined for 50 points as the Warriors continue to search for scoring depth on the roster.

Winona State falls to 3-6 (0-3 NSIC) while Wayne State improves to 5-6 (2-1 NSIC).

Despite the outcome, the Warriors put together a solid effort and hung with Wayne State all night in a back-and-forth affair. Winona State shot 41 percent and held the Wildcats below their season scoring average, including a stout first half that saw the Warriors lead 30-27 at the break.

WSU led by a 59-53 count with 4:43 remaining in the tilt on a three-pointer by Rosner, but the home proceeded to score eight unanswered points and closed the game on a 17-4 run.

The Warriors shot the ball well from downtown in the second half (6-14), but were unable to contain the Wildcat offense for the entirety of the second half as they shot 57 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes. However, it was still a strong bounce back for the WSU defense that yielded 91 points at Augustana on Friday night.

Wayne State owned a slight 33-30 rebounding edge and the teams were even on points in the paint at 26-apiece. Both sides committed 12 turnovers with the Wildcats recording a 15-10 advantage in points off those miscues.

Taylor and Wagner pulled down seven rebounds each while Luke Martens recorded a career-best 10 boards to go along with six points. Devin Whitelow dished out five assists in the setback.

The Warriors return to McCown Gymnasium next weekend looking to snap their three-game skid as they open a three-game homestand on Friday, December 13 against Minnesota State. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Winona.
