Duluth women shoot past Winona State in cross-division battle

DULUTH, Minn. – Winona State University was unable to overcome 11 turnovers and a torrid 60 percent shooting effort by Minnesota Duluth Friday night as the Bulldogs used a big first quarter coupled with a relentless second half to pull away with an 80-59 victory on their home court.

Duluth was lights out from beyond the arc at a 50 percent clip (12-24), and outscored the Warriors in points off turnovers, 19-10.  It marks Winona State's (10-9, 8-7 NSIC) largest loss of the year as the Warriors' average margin of defeat this season had been just six before the 21-point setback to Minnesota Duluth (12-3, 13-5 NSIC).

Despite allowing a season-high 26 points to the Bulldogs in the first quarter, the Warrior offense proved up to the challenge of hanging with Duluth from the opening tip.

After misfiring on its first attempt of the game, the home team was red-hot from the field, connecting on seven of nine shots, including a perfect effort in four straight from downtown to take an 18-10 lead at the 3:24 mark. Winona State's Emily Kieck connected from three at the three-minute mark to cut the Warrior deficit to five points. A three-pointer by Julia Silloway made it a 22-18 game in the final minute of the period, but the Bulldogs answered with four-straight points to close the quarter.

Duluth led wire-to-wire in the contest as the Bulldogs maintained a double-digit lead for all but two possessions of the second quarter. UMD preserved its advantage by shooting 62.5 percent from the field over the final two quarters.

Winona State coughed up just four turnovers in the second half of action, but simply could not keep paced with the Bulldogs in the final two frames as the home team continued to shoot the lights out along with owning a 17-10 edge on the glass.

Kieck led the Warriors with 13 points in the loss, followed by Silloway (12) who was perfect from the floor in the first half of play. Senior Kayla Schaefer added 10 points for WSU.

The Warriors will look to salvage a weekend split on the road trip with a 3:30 matchup at St. Cloud State Saturday afternoon.
