No. 15 Winona State blanked on day one of Lewis Invite

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Winona State University enjoyed the return of one of its All-Americans Friday afternoon, but endured the loss of another as the No. 15-ranked Warriors were swept on the first day of the Lewis Dome Invitational.

Lani Van Zyl returned to the lineup as WSU took on No. 16 Grand Valley State, but the Warriors were without fellow All-American Jordyn Kleman (flu) as the Lakers prevailed with a 1-0 extra inning victory. Winona State's offense was unable to scratch out a run the entire day as the Warriors were shut out in their finale by Wayne State (Mich.), 4-0.

Sophomore transfer Liz Pautz filled in admirably for Kleman in the Top-25 matchup. The right-hander allowed just an unearned run over 7.2 IP in the tough-luck loss as the Lakers walked-off in the bottom of the eighth. Pautz scattered seven hits, struck out seven and walked just one batter after issuing four free passes in her Warrior debut on Tuesday.

Grand Valley's All-American, Allison Lipovsky, tossed eight shutout innings while allowing just two hits and striking out nine WSU batters. Van Zyl and Alison Nowak recorded the two Warrior hits.

Winona State had perhaps its best chance of the day to score in the top of the first frame when Katie Kolb, who is also battling the flu, walked to lead off the game. The Warriors were unable to execute a sacrifice bunt to move Kolb to scoring position and Lipovsky proceeded to set the tone with a pair of strikeouts to end the early threat.

In the nightcap, the Warriors were only able to produce four hits – two of which came from Carly Kordich.

After falling victim to an unearned run in the loss to Grand Valley, WSU allowed two more unearned runs to cross the plate against Wayne State as the Warriors committed four errors on the day.

Alyssa Van Valey (1-1) was solid in her second straight outing, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits over 5.2 IP. The first two Wayne State runs were unearned in the bottom of the first frame and the Winona State offense was unable to make up for the difference.

The Warriors return to the dome in Rosemont Saturday for two more games against the University of Findlay and UW-Parkside beginning at 11 a.m.
