Winona State falls in OT despite Wagner’s career night

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Caleb Wagner did all he could Saturday night as Winona State University attempted to win its fifth straight contest and knock off the top team in the NSIC South. The senior's 47-point effort was not enough though, as the University of Sioux Falls prevailed past the Warriors in overtime, 87-85.

Wagner's scoring outburst is tied for the second-most all-time in Winona State's storied history and is the most points in a single game since 1996.

Wagner and Kevion Taylor accounted for 73 of Winona State's 85 points in the setback with each player connected from three-point land six times.

Winona State falls to 11-9 (8-6 NSIC) with its second overtime loss of the season while Sioux Falls (15-5, 11-3 NSIC) remains the team to beat in the South Division.

The Warriors shot a season-best 56.5 percent from beyond the arc (13-23) in the loss, led by Wagner's 6-7 effort as the senior's only miss came from deep beyond half court in the final second of overtime.

Wagner's career game notwithstanding, Saturday's result will stick with WSU as one that got away after leading on the road by five with 43 seconds remaining in regulation before the Cougars forced overtime.

Andrea Lo Biondo was the Warriors' next leading scorer after Wagner and Taylor with seven points while Luke Martens scored three, Alier Riak accounting for Winona State's only other points (2) off the bench.

Taylor recorded his fifth double-double of the year with 10 rebounds, but Sioux Falls otherwise owned the glass with 34-28 advantage. The Cougars pulled down 12 offensive rebounds which translated into 16 second-chance points.

Winona State was also plagued by 14 turnovers, an uncharacteristically high number for one of the top ball control teams in the country, which Sioux Falls turned into 20 points.

The Warriors return home next weekend to host Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State inside McCown Gymnasium in Winona.
