Winona State’s streak halted by Duluth

WINONA, Minn. – The NSIC North-leading Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs came into McCown Gymnasium on Friday night and ended Winona State University's four-game winning streak by a final score of 72-59. Turnovers and three-point shooting were the differences in the contest as UMD hit 10 shots from behind the arc, compared to just three for the Warriors.

WSU falls to 14-5 (10-5 NSIC) and remains in second in the South Division while Duluth improves to 16-5 (13-2 NSIC) atop the North.

Taylor Hustad once again led the Warriors offensively with 19 points on 9-16 shooting. Her post counterpart, Emma Fee, accounted for 14 points and a team-best eight rebounds in the setback.

As a team, the Warriors shot the ball well (46.4%), but they couldn't keep up with the Bulldogs, who shot 48.3% in the contest. Winona State coughed the ball up 17 times in the game – leading to 25 Bulldog points.

The Warriors came out strong out of the gate, taking an 11-2 lead on a layup by Hustad at the 5:12 mark of the quarter. After a brief Bulldog run, the Warriors closed the frame with six straight points for an 18-12 advantage heading to the second quarter.

Winona State's lead swelled to seven points on an and-one from Emily Kieck early in the second period before the Bulldogs began to heat up. A jumper by Jenna Bruss midway through the quarter stood as the Warriors' final lead at 25-23. With Duluth begin to pull away late, Hustad hit a fallaway jumper at the buzzer to cut the WSU deficit to 37-31 at halftime.

Both teams were on fire in the second quarter, shooting a combined 61% from the field. The Bulldogs used 10 points off turnovers as the difference though to outscore the Warriors in the frame, 26-19.

Hustad opened the third quarter with another bucket to make it a 37-33 contest, but it was all UMD from there as the Bulldogs used an 11-point run to open a double-digit lead and never looked back.

The Warriors are back inside McCown on Saturday afternoon to host the red-hot St. Cloud Huskies at 3:30 p.m. St. Cloud is coming off a convincing 73-52 win over Upper Iowa on Friday night.
