Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Winona State suffers first road loss at Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D. – It was an ice-cold night for the Winona State University women's basketball team on the second day of a two-game road trip that saw the Warriors shoot a season-low 29 percent and fall at Northern State University, 69-49. WSU posted its lowest scoring output of the year, while knocking down just two three-point attempts, and endured its first setback on the road of the 2019-20 campaign.

On the other end of the court, the Wolves shot 44 percent in front of their home fans.

Winona State falls to 9-3 (5-3 NSIC) with the loss and NSU improves to 9-5 (5-3 NSIC).

Northern State also won the battle on the boards, 35-32, including seven offensive rebounds which translated into 16 second-chance points.

A three-pointer by Taylor Hustad midway through the second quarter knotted the score at 24-24 before the Wolves went on a nine-point run over the next three minutes to claim a 33-24 advantage and take a 37-29 lead into the break.

Northern State led wire-to-wire over the final two frames as Winona State was held to just 10 points apiece in each of the ensuing quarters.

The loss was not for a lack of effort by Hustad who posted another huge game for WSU – recording 23 points and 10 boards for her seventh double-double of the year. The junior has scored at least 20 points in two her last three games.

Emily Kieck and freshman Shea Dechant scored six points apiece in a sluggish offensive night for Winona State.

The Warriors return home next weekend to open a four-game homestand against Wayne State College on Friday, January 10 at 5:30 p.m.
