Warriors close out Lewis Invitational with 1-2 weekend

It was a tale of two days for the Warriors. On Saturday, Winona State scored eight runs in the top of the sixth to defeat the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals 10-2 in six innings. The Warriors doubleheader on Sunday was quite the opposite, however, as they would score just three combined runs in losses to UW-Parkside (11-1) and Wayne State (MI) (5-2).

Following this weekend, Winona State's record now stands at 4-3.

On Saturday night, the Warriors found themselves locked in a battle with the undefeated Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State. Ali Nowak got things started right off the bat for the Warriors, hitting an RBI double to score Katie Kolb at the top of the first. Libby Neveau padded on to the Warriors lead with an RBI single in the fourth. The Cardinals managed to get two runners across the plate to lock things up at two in the bottom of the fourth. Just when the game looked like it could go into extra innings, Nowak led off the sixth inning with a homer to right centerfield. This would start a domino effect, as the warriors would score eight runs in the sixth inning to put the Cardinals away. Jordyn Kleman close out the game by shutting down the side with a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth. Kleman was phenomenal in the game, allowing just three hits over six innings while striking out eight.

Winona State had a quick turnaround on Sunday, as first pitch for their opening game against UW-Parkside was thrown just 12 hours after they finished the Saginaw Valley game. The Warriors struggled on both sides of the ball and would fall by a final score of 11-1. The Warriors did manage to muster up eight hits against the Ranger pitching staff, but eight runners left on base proved costly for the Warriors. Winona State's lone run came off a Rylee Stout RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

Just like the Parkside game, the Warriors saw themselves fall behind early against Wayne State (MI). Staring at a 5-0 deficit heading into the fifth, Winona State tried to muster up some magic and mount a comeback. Madison Meduna tripled to score Jen Giesey, then Meduna scored right after on a fielder's choice to cut the Wayne State (MI) lead to 5-2. Unfortunately, the Warriors failed to get a runner on base the final two innings and would lose their second game of the day. The lone bright spot for the Warriors was in the field, as they didn't record an error for the first time all season.

The Warriors are back on the road next weekend as they head down south to Peoria, Illinois for a Friday doubleheader against Purdue Northwest and University of Illinois-Springfield. First pitch is set for 9:30 a.m.
