The Winona State Warriors softball team went 1-1 in Peoria, Illinois on Friday. The Warriors defeated Purdue Northwest 5-1 in the opener before falling 4-3 in nine innings to Illinois-Springfield in the second game.
The Warriors outhit the Purdue Northwest Pride 10-4 and only committed one error en-route to a convincing 5-1 win in their first game of the day.
All-American
Jordyn Kleman was an absolute ace on the mound for the Warriors against the Pride. Kleman went the full seven innings and struck out 13 while allowing just one earned run to get the win.
The Warriors opened up the scoring in the fourth inning with an RBI single from
Libby Neveau, scoring
Rhiannon Reinardy.
Neveau picked up her second and third RBI's of the game on a double to right field in the sixth and
Rylee Stout blasted one over the right field fence in the top of the seventh to put the Warriors up 5-0.
For the game
Rylee Stout went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's.
The second game of the day was a long nine inning affair that, despite some late game heroics, saw the Warriors fall 4-3.
The Warriors picked up right where they left off in game one by scoring a run in the second on an
Ann Smolenski double to left field.
After three runs from the Prairie Stars in the top of the sixth, Winona State bounced back with an Ali Nowak home run to cut the lead to one in the bottom of the sixth.
Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh,
Marissa Mullen stepped up to the plate and hit a clutch home run to tie the game up at three.
The Warriors managed to record just one hit over the two extra innings and Illinois Springfield would win the game off an RBI double in the ninth.
Runners left on base plagued the Warriors again, as they left 10 runners stranded, compared to just four for the Prairie Stars.
Ann Smolenski went 2-for-4 for the game and
Katie Kolb forced the UIS pitchers to work as she was walked three times.
Jordyn Kleman would come in for the final 3.2 innings and strike out four in the loss.
The Warriors have a week off before they travel to Winter Haven, Florida for their Spring games. The Warriors first matchup is against Lewis University on Sunday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m.
