The Winona State men's basketball showed a lot of fight Saturday night, but a late game collapse cost them as they would fall 76-72 to Minnesota Duluth in the NSIC quarterfinals.
With the loss the Warriors finish the season with a record of 18-12 (14-8 NSIC) while Minnesota Duluth moves to 22-8 (15-7 NSIC). The Bulldogs will face Minnesota State in the semi-finals Monday afternoon.
After leading 40-29 at the half, the Bulldogs outscored the Warriors 47-32 over the final 20 minutes of the game.
The Warriors started off strong, getting layups from
Alec Rosner and
Caleb Wagner to start the game.
Kevion Taylor hit a three to give the Warriors a 10 point lead just seven minutes into the game. After a Wagner three with six minutes left in the half, the Bulldogs went on a quick 5-0 run to cut the WSU lead to six. The Warriors then locked down and outscored Minnesota Duluth 15-10 over the final five minutes of the game to take a 13 point lead heading into the locker room.
After a comeback by Duluth in the first 10 minutes of the half,
Caleb Wagner took over, scoring 10 of the Warriors 13 points in a 13-0 run that saw them take a 16 point lead. Up 69-53 with 6:35 left in the game, the Warriors were in the driver's seat and already looking towards a semi-final game for the second straight season. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they went ice cold for the rest of the game while the Bulldogs started heating up. Winona State turned the ball over three times and missed eight straight shots over the final six minutes to allow the Bulldogs to go on a 23-0 run that shut the door on the Warriors' season.
Caleb Wagner hit a three as time expired to give him 30 points for the night.
The Warriors shot 43% for the game while Minnesota Duluth hit their shots at a 50% clip.
Kevion Taylor finished with 12 points while
Alec Rosner added 10.
Andrea Lo Biondo led both teams with 11 boards.
Caleb Wagner finishes his incredible career with 1,449 points, good for 15
th all time in Winona State history.
