Sioux Falls, S.D. -- Emma Fee had a great night for the Winona State women's basketball team, scoring a career high 30 points Sunday, but the Warriors fell 73-67 to the University of Sioux Falls.
Head coach Scott Ballard and company saw the 6'1" senior center from Burnsville, Minn. tie the best single-game outing in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), with Fee's 30 points today matching St. Cloud State's Lydia Haack's 30-point game against Upper Iowa on 01/02.
The Warriors were much-improved at the foul line from the night before - a 67-61 loss to USF - both in trips earned and success while there: WSU was 13-15 from the charity stripe, after only a 2-of-6 night on Saturday. Allie Pickrain (3-for-3), Shea Dechant (2-for-2) and Fee (6-for-6) were all perfect at the line for WSU. Fee was also impressive away from the basket, as she went 2-for-2 from three-point land and grabbed five rebounds on the day. Mattie Schimenz, Taylor Hustad and Emily Kieck all had four assists, with Hustad also tops in rebounds for the Warriors with nine, while Alex Dornfeld scored eight points.
"We out-shot USF in both games but got beat on the boards and at the free throw line. Our team is not where we want to be yet, but we are improving," said Ballard as he summed up the weekend.
Sioux Falls, currently receiving votes in the 2020-21 NCAA Division II poll, was led by Division I transfer Anna Brecht, who had 22 points, including an impressive 12-for-12 night at the foul line. The Cougars' Dallie Hoskinson grabbed 13 rebounds and Anna Goodhope also scored 20 points for USF.
Ballard noted, "Hopefully with more uninterrupted practice time, we can make significant progress."
Winona State, 0-3 / 0-2 NSIC South, returns to campus to prepare to host Augustana University next Friday and Saturday, January 22-23.
Tipoff times are set for 6pm Friday, 2pm Saturday.
