KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the second straight day,
Alec Rosner led his team in scoring. And, for the second straight day, Winona State earned a victory, this time beating Henderson State 79-62 to finish the Central Region Challenge unbeaten at 2-0.
Rosner scored 14 points and hauled in five rebounds to pace the Warriors as they rode a fast start to a significant halftime lead, appearing much more ready at the opening tip than Henderson State. Rosner was 5-of-9 from the field with one 3-pointer to his credit, a decidedly different stat line that his 28-point effort yesterday in which he drained six triples. Rosner remained perfect from the foul line in 2021, going 3-for-3 and he had two assists in the game. The Appleton, Wis. junior was also 4-for-4 from the foul line in the Warrior 79-68 win over Pittsburg State on Friday.
Point guard
Devin Whitelow scored 13 points on a 4-of-7 effort from the field, while also hitting all his free throws in a 4-of-4 night at the charity stripe. Also reaching double digits in scoring was
Owen King with 11 points against the Reddies in 28 minutes of action.
Luke Martens and
Connor Drew tied for the team lead in rebounds with six.
As a team, Winona State shot 53.1% and led by as many as 25 in the game. WSU saw 24 points from players in the paint and non-starters accounted for 27 of the 79 points on the day. Defensively, the Warriors held HSU to a 43.9% clip from the floor; the two teams tied in rebounding at 31 apiece.
At 2-0, the Warriors are off to their best start since 2016 and will return home to McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court for their home opener against Viterbo University. Winona State and the V-Hawks will tip off on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7pm.
