QUINCY, Ill. - The Winona State University women's basketball team used a massive second quarter comeback to fuel a 70-46 season-opening win against McKendree University on Friday, Nov. 19 in Pepsi Arena on the campus of Quincy University.
The Warriors (1-0, 0-0 NSIC) outscored the Bearcats (0-3, 0-0 GLVC) by an impressive 26-6 in the second quarter, offsetting a slow start that saw WSU trailing 22-15 after the opening 10 minutes.
Taylor Hustad racked up 18 points on a 9-of-15 shooting night to lead the Winona State. Teammate
Emma Fee was also dialed in, going 7-of-11 from the floor, while hauling in seven rebounds and grabbing a pair of steals.
Ava Sergio broke double-digits with 12 points and led the team by collecting eight boards as well.
Lauren Fech dished out four assists, and
Caitlin Riley added 12 points to the Warrior effort.
WSU erased a cold start to the game to reach finish with an overall shooting percentage of 48.5%, although the 3-point shooting sights were slightly off, with the Warriors connecting on just 6-of-25 from behind the arc. In stark contrast to the Warrior win over McKendree in 2017 when the Warriors made 22-of-24 free throws, WSU was not awarded a trip to the foul line in the game this evening. After allowing 22 points in the first quarter, Winona State held MU to just six, seven and 11 points in final three quarters of play.
The Winona State - McKendree matchup was the opening contest of the 2021 Hansen-Spear Funeral Home Classic hosted Quincy University. The Warrior win made for a strong start for fans, families and followers eager for start of the 2021-22 campaign. Ferris State University and Quincy will tip off at 7pm CST in the nightcap.
Next up for Winona State and head coach
Scott Ballard will be Quincy University. WSU and the Lady Hawks are scheduled to start on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 4pm.
