MARSHALL, Minn. - The Winona State University men's basketball team fell victim to a cold-shooting second half on Friday, and lost to Southwest Minnesota State, 50-49 on the road in Marshall, Minn.
The Warriors were held to just 10 points in the second half while the Mustangs dug out of an 11-point halftime deficit to deal Winona State the NSIC South setback.
Devin Whitelow dished out 8 assists, seven in the first half, while also scoring 11 points and hauling in six rebounds. The Friday night effort by the Peoria, Ill. senior also saw him lead his team in steals with three.
Alec Rosner and
Nick Klug each had eight points in the game.
Overall, it was a tough night shooting the basketball for WSU, going just 19-of-50 from the floor. Winona State was 8-of-25 from behind the arc and hauled in 27 rebounds, with only three at the offensive end of the floor. In contrast, SMSU scored 11 second-chance points and had 40 total rebounds.
The Mustangs had two players reach double-digits, with Jake Phipps scoring 11 and Anthony Costello contributing 12 to the winning effort. Phipps and teammate Cliff McCrey led their team with eight rebounds.
The 50-49 final score represented the lowest scoring output for either Winona State or Southwest Minnesota State on the season. The result also snaps a three-game winning streak for the Warriors, who fall to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in NSIC South action. WSU returns to the court tomorrow against the University of Sioux Falls, with a 3:30 pm tip-off on the road against the Cougars.
