MARSHALL, Minn. - The Winona State University women's basketball team received a double-double from
Emma Fee and saw a pair of freshman have season-high outings, but found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard, falling to Southwest Minnesota State, 69-64.
The Mustangs mounted a second-quarter surge to send the two teams into the locker room deadlocked at 37-37 and - unfortunately for Winona State - SMSU maintained momentum in the second half to deal the Warriors a NSIC South setback.
Two freshman played key roles in the game for Winona State, with guard
Lindsey Hahn and forward
Vanessa Alexander both posting season highs in the contest. Hahn hit for 20 points on the evening to lead the Warriors in a game where she was 6-for-8 from behind the arc. Alexander had seven rebounds for WSU and chipped in four points.
Emily Kieck added 10 points to the Warrior effort.
Emma Fee was second for WSU in scoring with 16 points and 13 rebounds to earn her first double-double of the year and the second for Winona State this season. Fee was 6-of-19 from the floor and a perfect 3-for-3 on free throws.
As a team, Winona State shot 38.7% in the game and was even better from 3-point territory at 42.3%. The Warriors scored 24 points in the paint and were 5-of-6 at the charity stripe, while the Mustangs hit 12 of their 14 free throw opportunities. WSU had 37 rebounds total, 11 on the offensive end of the floor.
Southwest Minnesota State was led by Meleah Reinhart who had 12 points and Sam Wall with 11. Sadie Stelter had six rebounds in the winning effort for the Mustangs. The SMSU win snaps a 12-game Winona State winning streak over the Mustangs, and represents just the third Mustang victory against WSU since January 26, 2013.
Winona State (4-4, 1-3 NSIC) will look to bounce back when they take on the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday. The Warriors and Cougars will start at 5:30pm in Sioux Falls.
