St. Paul, Minn. --
Taylor Hustad and
Mattie Schimenz both reached double digits in scoring, but Concordia-St. Paul was able to pull away from Winona State to hand the Warriors a 70-55 NSIC setback Friday night.
Head coach Scott Ballard saw Hustad score 12 points and haul in six rebounds in the Warrior effort, while Schimenz, a freshman from from Brown Deer, Wis.. added 10 points and a pair of steals in the series opening contest with the Golden Bears. Emily Kieck led Winona State with four assists.
As a team, WSU was 11-of-14 from the foul line and won the rebounding battle, 34-32 over CSP. The Warriors struggled to score consistently, shooting 19-of-50 from the floor overall. One bright spot was a solid performance from behind the arc, going 6-of-14 collectively on the night, with both Schminez and Caitlyn Riley hitting a pair of triples.
Concordia-St. Paul parlayed a hot start into a steady advantage over the course of the contest. Up 20-10 after the first quarter, the Golden Bears ended up with three players in double digits; Meghan DuBois tallied 17 points, while Riley Wheatcraft scored 14 and Sidney Wentland added 10 for CSP.
Concordia-St. Paul has had the Warriors number of late, winning the last five meetings between the programs. Winona State (2-7 / 2-6 NSIC) will look to break the streak tomorrow, when the two team take the court again in St. Paul. Tipoff time is set for 2pm.
