WSU Women's Basketball Sweeps Upper Iowa to Conclude Season

Warriors win three of four games in final two weeks

Fayette, Iowa - Winona State women's basketball concluded the 2020-21 NSIC season on a high note, beating Upper Iowa 92-80 on Saturday, and with the Warrior win, sweep the Peacocks on the weekend.

WSU was led by Taylor Hustad with 21 points and eight rebounds, team highs in both categories on the day.  Hustad was 9-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-5 from the free throw line. She also handed out three assists in almost 36 minutes of work.  Allie Pickrain added 14 and was on fire from behind the arc, going 4-of-6 from 3-point distance.  Mattie Schimenz was perfect from the foul line at 6-of-6 and effective when running the Warrior offense, collecting seven assists.  Caitlin Riley collected 11 points, and Emma Fee had 12, rounding out the top four scorers for head coach Scott Ballard

Hustad's 21 points represent a season high for her in 2020-21, besting her 18 against Minnesota State on Feb. 5.  Her .750 field goal percentage led the team and with 16 points on Friday evening against UIU, she scored 37 across two games, her best scoring weekend of the season.

As a team, Winona State continued their momentum from a last-minute win over Concordia-St. Paul last week, winning three of their last four to close out the season.  Upper Iowa was led by Natalie Dinius with 20 points, while UIU teammate Brook Evenson had 16 points and eight rebounds.  Lydia Haack had 19 for the Peacocks who conclude the season at 1-15 overall, 0-14 in the NSIC South.

Winona State has won 15 consecutive games against Upper Iowa and finishes the season at 5-7 overall, 5-6 in the NSIC South.  The Warriors had four contests canceled during the season due to COVID-19 considerations.  They notched wins over Wayne State, Minnesota-State-Mankato, Concordia-St. Paul, in addition to the sweep of Upper Iowa.
