Winona State battles Bemidji State, earns 6-1 NSIC win

WSU picks up key sweep at home

Winona, Minn. - The Winona State University women's tennis team found themselves on the right side of a 6-1 win over Bemidji State on Sunday, Feb. 28, but the final tally did not fully represent the Warrior work that was done to claim a key NSIC match.

After earning the doubles point with three wins to start the day against the Beavers, WSU had to dig deep to claim some key singles victories in several matches to move their record to 4-2 on the NSIC season.

Head coach Tom Sanvik saw his side win third-set tiebreakers at #1 and #3 singles to push the final win tally to six for Winona State, as Beth Murman battled in #1 singles, winning 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 over Sophie Groen in a well-fought match.

In #3 singles, Rina Niehoff came back to win over Claudie Biland, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7.  Faith Young started the singles success for Winona State with a 6-0, 6-1 win at #6, while teammate Brooke Jorgensen defeated BSU's Hannah Peterson 6-1, 6-2 at #4 singles.

Bemidji State's Laney Rutkowski stopped the Warriors' streak with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Winona State's Sara Anderson for the first Beaver victory of the day and closing the team score to 3-1.  However, Rachel Kelly rallied to beat BSU's Shaelyn Johnson, 6-3, 6-4 with the clinching WSU victory.  Her win was followed by Murman and Niehoff's tiebreaker triumphs, giving Winona State the 6-1 win and the sweep on the weekend.

With the 7-0 victory over  Minnesota Crookston the day before, Winona State now sits at 4-2 on the NSIC season.  The Warriors will have a break in their schedule and return to the court on Saturday, March 20 when they face Upper Iowa University. Match time is set for 4:30pm.
