Winona State Men's Basketball Earns Important Win

Kevion Taylor season high 30 paces Warriors

Mankato, Minn -  Kevion Taylor had one of his best nights ever as a Warrior and Luke Martens could not miss, as the pair lead the Winona State men's basketball team picked up an important NSIC South win on the road against Minnesota State, dropping the Mavericks 86-71.

Kevion Taylor led all scorers with 30 on the evening, and hauled in eight rebounds in his strongest scoring effort of the season for head coach Todd EisnerLuke Martens did not miss from the floor or the foul line, going 6-for-6 from the field and 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.  He also notched three steals and six boards among his key contributions to the Warrior win, where he played 35 minutes. Connor Dillon added 12 off the bench, while Owen King reached double-digits as well, scoring 12 and leading the team in assists with four.

Winona State earned 21 of their first half points off of Maverick turnovers, as WSU had five steals in the opening 20 minutes to feed the offense. As a team on the day, Winona State had ten steals total in a strong defensive effort.

Taylor's top performance saw him go 10-for-24 overall and he was perfect from the charity stripe, hitting all eight of his free-throw attempts. The Milwaukee, Wis. product likes life on the road, having tallied 28 points at Augustana on Jan. 23, and 22 points at Upper Iowa this season. Taylor's career high in points scored came in the 2018-19 season, when he scored 32 against Bemidji State in a 87-59 Warrior win, on the road at BSU.

With the victory, Winona State moves to 2-3 in the NSIC South and 4-4 overall.  Minnesota State drops to 6-3 in the division and 7-4 overall.  The same two teams tangle tomorrow, with a 2pm start time in the Taylor Center.
