Winona, Minn. – In a game that they trailed from the jump, the Winona State Warriors struggled handling the ball Friday night, committing 28 turnovers en route to a 76-59 loss at the hands of the Minnesota State Mavericks.
Taylor Hustad led the Warriors with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
With the win the Mavericks jump to 6-4 overall (5-3 NSIC), while the Warriors fall to 1-6 overall (1-5 NSIC).
Minnesota State jumped on WSU early, with their pesky full-court press causing a turnover on each of the Warrior's first five possessions. After the Mavericks went on an 11-0 run to start the game, sophomore
Caitlin Riley stopped the bleeding with a three from the corner. After going down 21-5 and looking like they were dead in the water, the Warriors outscored the Mavericks 11-2 over the final three minutes of the opening frame to cut the lead to 23-16.
Turnovers were the story of the second quarter as well, as the Warriors committed 10 turnovers in the quarter, compared to scoring just 12 points. After threes by
Katie Sowa and Riley,
Taylor Hustad would score the final six points of the half for the Warriors who would head into the locker room staring at a 40-28 deficit.
Allie Pickrain did her best to bring the Warriors back in the third quarter, hitting four straight three pointers to keep the game in reach. It was not meant to be, however, as Minnesota State held the Warriors to just nine fourth quarter points to give them the 17-point victory.
The Mavericks dominated in points in the paint, as they scored 54 of their 76 points in the painted area, compared to just 22 by the Warriors.
Winona State did a good job of guarding the three-point line, holding MSU to just 3-20 from behind the arc. In contrast, the Warriors tied a season high with eight three-pointers.
The Warriors shot 21-57 (.368) from the field and 8-24 (.333) from three for the game.
Hustad led Winona State with 18 points, followed by Pickrain (15) and Riley (10). Hustad led the way with 10 boards, while
Mattie Schimenz dished out five assists.
Winona State will be back at it again tomorrow as they look to get one back against the Mavericks at 2 pm in McCown.
