Warriors open Hyvee Classic with win over Missouri Western State

St. Joseph, MO - The Winona State softball team kept their winning streak alive Friday night, taking down the Hyvee Classic hosts Missouri Western State by a final score of 10-1.

With the win the Warriors move to 9-0 on the season, while the Griffons fall to 11-3.

After a scoreless opening inning, the Warriors used a MWSU error to bring home Rylee Stout for the first run of the game. Later in the inning Sam Keller hit a sacrifice fly to score Ann Smolenski to make it a 2-0 lead for the Warriors after two.

Libby Neveau opened the third inning by reaching second on another Griffon error. The very next at bat, Marissa Mullen would bring her home with an RBI single to right field.

Neveau put the team on her back in the fourth inning as she hit her fifth home run of the season to give the Warriors a 6-1 lead. Following Neveau's bomb, WSU used another MWSU miscue to score Kayla Kerkman and Stout to go up 8-1 after four.

Mullen and Stout would each knock in an run in the fifth inning to give the Warriors a 10-1 lead after five.

Senior Jordyn Kleman (6-0) was lights out in the win, allowing just two hits while striking out eight. Sydney Rader (5-1) took the loss for the Griffons.

Katie Kolb and Alison Nowak each went 2-for-4 on the day. Neveau led the way with three RBI's.

The story of the game was errors, as only three of WSU's 10 runs were earned.

The Warriors won't have much time to celebrate their win as they turn right around for a tough two games tomorrow. The Warriors open their day against No. 9 Rogers State at 12 p.m., followed by matchup against the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State at 2 p.m.
