Warriors light up scoreboard in sweep of Dragons

Winona, MN - After nearly two years away from their home field, the Winona State softball team was itching to get on the field and play in front of their home fans again. The Warriors didn't disappoint their fans on Friday as they blitzed the Dragons of MSU-Moorhead by scores of 20-3 and 14-5, both of which were five-inning affairs.

With the wins Winona State moves to 15-2 (4-0 NSIC) while MSU-Moorhead falls to 3-15 (1-3 NSIC).

Game 1

Winona State didn't take much time to get going in game one, as just two batters into the game the Warriors went up 2-0 on a blast to left field by Rylee Stout to score Katie Kolb. Later in the inning Ann Smolenski hit a 2 RBI double to extend the lead even more. An RBI walk by Carly Kordich and a SAC fly by Kolb gave the Warriors a 6-0 lead after one.

The Warriors seemed to have calmed down in the second inning, until freshman Teaghen Amwoza hit a 3-run bomb to make it a 9-run game after two.

WSU opened up the scoring in the third inning off of RBI doubles from both Marissa Mullen and Sam Keller. Mullen would score on an error, and Abbie Hlas hit a 2 RBI double to make it 15-0 after three.

In the fourth inning, Gabby Gedville used a Madison Meduna RBI single to score the Warriors 16th run of the game. On the very next at-bat, with the bases loaded, freshman Emma Quimby managed to record the first hit of her career on a monster grand slam over left field fence to make it a 20-0 game.

Senior Jordyn Kleman (10-0) was her usual elite self Friday afternoon, striking out five while allowing just four hits in the lopsided victory.

Sam Keller and Stout each went 2-for-2 in the victory, while Quimby led the way with four RBI's, followed closely by Amwoza with three.

Game 2

The first inning of the second game started much like the first, with Katie Kolb getting on base and Rylee Stout bringing her home immediately with a two-run home run. Just a few batters later, Sam Keller hit an RBI single to bring home Libby Neveau to extend the Warriors lead. RBI's by Ann Smolenski and Teaghen Amwoza added a few more runs to the Warrior's tally, then Abby Hlas used a throwing error by the MSU-Moorhead shortstop to score WSU's sixth run of the inning.

Following an uncharacteristic scoreless second inning Winona State added to their lead in the third. Neveau hit 2 RBI single to score Carly Kordich and Kolb. Just a few batters later Keller hit an RBI single to score Stout, and that was immediatly followed by a Smolenski RBI on a SAC fly to right field.

Keller decided a 10-run lead wasn't enough in the fourth inning as she hit the first home run of her young career on a grand slam to left field to bring the Warriors lead up to 14-0.

Liz Pautz (5-2) was on fire in the second game, allowing just two hits while striking out 10 in the win.

Keller and Neveau each had three hits and three RBI's in game two.

Over the course of the two games Winona State combined for 34 runs on 26 hits, all while striking out just three times on the day.The last time Winona State scored 20 runs in a game was on April 10, 2005, when they hung 23 on Bemidji State in a 23-1 lopsided victory.

Winona State and Head Coach Greg Jones won't celebrate these wins long as they turn right around for another NSIC double-header tomorrow. WSU faces Northern State at 1 p.m., with the second game of the double-header to follow after.
