Winona State women's basketball downed by UMD, 61-47

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's basketball team kept pace with the University of Minnesota Duluth for three quarters on Friday, January 14, but the Bulldogs used a 23-point fourth frame to pull away from the Warriors, 61-47.

Winona State started the contest with a lock-down defensive effort, holding UMD to just four points in the opening quarter of play. Strong Warrior defense early on forced the Bulldogs into a sub-par 26 point first-half scoreline, but WSU was also cold to start, going just 1-for-9 from 3-point territory and 10-for-29 from the floor in the first half.  Winona State trailed Minnesota Duluth, 26-24 at the break.

The Warriors were awarded just two trips to the foul line in the game, while Minnesota Duluth was 10-of-13 from the charity stripe, all in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs also harassed Winona State into 14 turnovers, which they parlayed into 19 points in the contest. The decisive fourth quarter saw UMD go 6-of-12 from the floor, and the NSIC neighbors to the north outscored WSU 23-11 in the game's last ten minutes.

Taylor Hustad led WSU with 16 points in the game, while also notching a pair of steals. Emma Fee added eight points and seven rebounds, matching Hustad's seven boards. Mattie Schimenz and Emily Kieck logged 34 and 30 minutes, respectively, for the Warriors.

Minnesota Duluth (10-4 overall, 9-2 NSIC North) was led by Sarah Grow with 20 points and teammate Brooke Olson had 13. Olson also hauled in 10 rebounds.

Winona State (7-8 overall, 4-7 NSIC South) will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday January 14 when they host St. Cloud State University.  The Huskies and Warriors will tip-off at 5:30pm in McCown Gymnasium.
