ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Winona State University women's basketball team went into Wachs Arena at Northern State University on Saturday, January 22 looking to pick up a sweep on an NSIC road trip in which they dispatched Minnesota State - Moorhead the evening before, 75-66. When the dust settled at NSU, the Warriors went 2-for-2 on the weekend, beating Northern State, 65-55
Winona State led at the halftime break 34-30, thanks in part to a balanced scoring effort in the first 20 minutes.
Mattie Schimenz tallied nine points in the first half, while Warrior teammate
Caitlin Riley notched eight and hauled in three rebounds.
Taylor Hustad had seven points over the opening two-quarters of action.
In the second half, the Warriors stuck to the playbook and pulled away from the host Wolves. Much like the night before in the Warrior win over Minnesota State - Moorhead, WSU spread the wealth offensively over all four quarters, with Hustad (17) Schimenz (12), Alex Dornfield (9), and Riley (8) sharing the scoring load. Hustad and
Emily Kieck were major catalysts in diversifying the Winona State scoring attack, with Kieck collecting six assists and Hustad four as seven different Warriors scored four or more points in the game.
As a team, Winona State shot 49.1% from the floor and was 8-of-20 from behind the arc. WSU was particularly effective down low, scoring 38 points in the paint, compared to 24 for the Wolves. NSU was led by Haley Johnson with 17 points on the night.
Winona State (9-9, 6-8 NSIC) returns home for contests next weekend against the University of Mary on Friday, Jan. 28 and against Minot State University on Saturday, Jan. 29. Tip-off times in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court at 5:30pm and 3:30pm, respectively.
