WINONA, Minn. – Hitting a career milestone mark in front of a home crowd in an important NSIC victory is always outstanding. Hitting two? Priceless.
Devin Whitelow scored his 1,000th-career point as a Warrior and head coach
Todd Eisner hit the 100-win mark at Winona State as WSU rolled Concordia - St. Paul, 89-67 in McCown Gymnasium on Thursday evening.
For Eisner, his 100
th win at WSU moves his career total to 516 victories and puts WSU at 15-9 overall on the year. Whitelow's 1,000
th point came early in the contest, as the dynamic senior point guard scored 11 first-half points, needing just eight heading into the game to reach 1,000.
In the game, Winona State led comfortably throughout much of evening, although Concordia, St. Paul stuck around long enough to keep the decision in doubt until just under five minutes to play.
WSU held a 12-point halftime advantage at 44-32, with Whitelow scoring the final five points of the period with a long-range 3-pointer and a pair of free throws under a minute to play.
After the break, the Golden Bears clawed away to draw within six points just over five minutes into the second half, but
Connor Dillon made sure the CSP hope was short-lived, hitting back-to-back three pointers to stretch the Winona State advantage by to double-digits at 59-47.
Another run by CSP saw the Golden Bears' Ian Sluice reduce the Warrior lead to seven points at 64-57 with almost ten minutes remaining in the game. This time,
Connor Drew delivered the answer, sparking a WSU response by going 2-for-2 at the foul line and then scoring a bucket and another free throw moments later to kick start a final Winona State push.
Winona State (15-9, 11-8 NSIC) held Concordia – St. Paul (3-24, 2-18 NSIC) to just five points in the final five minutes of the contest, providing Whitelow the chance to exit the game to an appreciative Warrior faithful.
Individually, five Warriors reached double figures, with
Alec Rosner leading the way with 24 points, including a 6-of-10 effort from behind the arc.
Connor Dillon was almost unstoppable offensively for WSU, going 8-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-5 from three-point distance with 20 points scored in the game. Whitelow finished with 15 points and eight assists, while
Connor Drew and
Luke Martens scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
As a team, WSU was 33-of-58 (56.9%) from the floor and 14-of-25 (56.0%) on triples. The Warriors hit 9-of-11 free throws and hauled in 36 rebounds. CSP was led by Elijah Ormiston with 18 points.
Eisner and his team will look for win number 16 on the season this Saturday, traveling to Minnesota State - Mankato for a 3:30 pm start in the Taylor Center. Saturday's game will conclude the 2021-22 regular season for Winona State, and the Warriors will then turn their attention to the postseason.
